McAuley Poets

On Tuesday, April 16, 2013, six McAuley girls attended a breakout poetry session at the College of Mount St. Joseph. The session is called the Mount’s Annual Celebration of Teaching and Learning. This celebration takes place once a year and includes multiple dual enrollment (schools that offer classes for college credit with the approval of the college) schools.

Each year, the day starts with a keynote speaker on an important issue.  This year, the speakers organized a presentation called, “Our Stories, Their Stories: Meeting Our Challenges and Molding Our Identities.” Dr. Lynda Crane and Dr. Tracy McDonough spoke about schizophrenia and the effects it can have on a person. Stories were told about four victims of schizophrenia and how they deal with their diagnosis. After the stories were told, the audience was led to a small theatre, where the hour-long breakout session began.

The six McAuley girls (listed below), then went up to the stage, one by one, to read one of their original poems that matched the theme of “story” or “struggle.” The majority of the girls read poems that they had written in Mrs. Heile’s Creative Writing class. Along with the McAuley girls, there were also poetry students from Seton, Purcell-Marian, Mother of Mercy, and the Mount invited to read their original poetry as well.

The McAuley students who attended the session were Abby Doyle, Nikki Hoffman, Elizabeth Baxter, Celina Junker, Sammie Hayes, and Lauren Jacobson.
