Recently, Creative Cooking students had the opportunity to visit historic Findlay Market, the only surviving municipal market house in Cincinnati. The market house is built on land donated to the City of Cincinnati by the estate of General James Findlay. Findlay Market was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Amanda Ziegler easily came up with five things she liked about the field trip. She market1mentioned that she was amazed at the wide range of vendors, which gave her the chance to browse through so many items at the market. Another thing Amanda liked was the use of composting bins, which she said are good for the environment. Amanda also enjoyed the fact that there is a rich history behind where the food actually comes from, and most of the products can be bought through fair trade. One final thing Amanda liked about the trip included the yummy gelato she bought at Dojo Gelato.

Anna Bollin, too, had a great time on the Findlay Market field trip. She took an interest in all the foods she saw and sampled. Anna said she was amazed by the variety of foods. She said she liked the pizza she ate from the Taste of Belgium and would definitely get it again if she returned to the market. She was shocked at the size of the pickles she saw; however, she did not eat one. She did eat a huge cookie, though, which she claimed was amazing! The highlight of the field trip for Anna was that a vendor allowed her to hold a giant fish. She said that alone was an exciting experience for her.

Tristyn Boner had a great time, as well. She was pleased with the customer service and claimed that everyone working was so helpful and could answer any questions she had. She said she had to check out the soap vendor’s booth while she was visiting, especially since many people raved about it, and she thought the soap smelled wonderful. Aside from soap shopping, Tristyn mainly browsed and looked at the foods. She said it was pleasing to see the food because everything looked very fresh. Also while browsing through the market, she stopped by the tea shop, Churchill’s, and was shocked at the many types of tea sold there. Tristyn’s favorite part of the trip was going to one of the bakeries and looking at all the mouthwatering desserts, which she said looked and smelled so good!

Sammi Girdler said this trip was a great learning experience for her. She said there was so much to see and do for people of all ages at Findlay Market, making it a great place for families. As Sammi walked around throughout the day, she was touched by everyone’s friendliness. She said that not only were the vendors friendly, but everyone else visiting the market was friendly, too. Sammi mentioned that she could feel a sense of connectedness and community between people. One thing Sammi got to do on this trip, which she said was one of her favorite parts, was play a drum. She said a street musician was playing his drums, and he offered the girls a chance to play along with him. Sammi took the opportunity, even if she isn’t a professional drummer!

Findlay Market is a fun and interesting place to visit. Remember it if you’re looking for something to do this summer.
